What if Juliet didn’t end it all over Romeo?
That is the simple but brilliant premise behind & Juliet, the exuberant musical arriving in Toowoomba this March, turning one of literature’s most tragic love stories into a bold and joyful second act.
Created by the Emmy Award-winning writer behind Schitt’s Creek, the show flips Shakespeare’s ending on its head and imagines Juliet choosing a completely different path. Instead of tragedy, she sets off on a journey of self-discovery, friendship and new love, proving there is far more to her story than the final scene we all remember.
Along the way, the production stitches together a soundtrack of some of the most recognisable pop songs of the last few decades. Expect sing-along favourites including Since U Been Gone, …Baby One More Time, I Want It That Way, Larger Than Life, Roar, It’s My Life and That’s The Way It Is, cleverly woven into the story in surprising ways.
The result is part musical theatre, part pop concert and entirely good fun. It is a high-energy show that does not take itself too seriously while still delivering plenty of heart.
The production is also one of The Empire’s two major in-house productions for the year, giving local audiences the chance to see the global hit musical right here in Toowoomba.
And for those who are not ready for the night to end when the curtain falls, the fun continues with Juliet’s Club. On 13 and 14 March, once the show wraps up, the Armitage Centre will transform into a pop-fuelled dance floor with a live DJ spinning back-to-back classic hits so audiences can keep the party going well into the evening.
The show runs across two weekends, with evening performances and Sunday matinees.
