62 Margaret St, East Toowoomba

ABOUT / We'll be the first to say it - it's almost criminal it's taken us till now to feature this East Toowoomba institution (and an institution it is). Turning four years old this October, and tucked beneath the sprawling camphor laurel tree on Margaret & Mary Streets, Sage & Butler is one of the city's most loved cafés - a neighbourhood café that its regulars are fiercely protective of (and would genuinely probably not tell you about, if they thought you'd take their table), with a seasonal menu packed with creative flavours, and some of the best coffee in town.

The name is no accident. Inspired by the great English houses of the early 1900s - when hospitality was 'less buzzword' and more a way of life - owners Morgan and Matthew Lejeune brought together years of collective experience (Café Valetta, Gips and James Street Grocer) to create something uniquely theirs. No fuss. No fanfare. Just very very good.

DESIGN / Warm, considered, and elevated without being stuffy - the interior pays deliberate homage to that early 1900s English influence. Outside, the camphor laurel does all the work - footpath dining with a genuine European street café feel. People-watching included.

DOG FRIENDLY / Dogs are not just welcome, but encouraged and fresh water bowls are provided out front for visiting pets. On any given morning, you'll find no shortage of adorable and 'very good boys'.

FOOD & DRINK / Chef Lindsay has free rein over a seasonal menu, and it shows. Cabinet food that tastes like something your mum used to make - only better (if you've ever had their Carrot Cake, you know) - alongside a café menu that makes it seriously hard to choose. Coffee heralds from Single O - one of Australia's most celebrated specialty roasters.

MUST TRIES/ The Strawberry Avocado Toast is the kind of thing you think about on the drive home - lemon myrtle cashew cream, strawberry macadamia pesto, crispy parmesan, seed lace tuile - (but, seriously! what kind of delicious wizardry is this?). And that Chorizo Breakfast Potato Hash. . . Boy Oh Boy. (We could honestly gush over everything we ate).
