The Field Guide's Spring newspaper is out now

Our 21st edition – ready for your spring – is out this weekend.

Published 09 Septmeber 2026

The fact that it's Spring already, is, quite frankly. A little absurd. Don't get me wrong, I love Spring.

Spring in Toowoomba always arrives with a certain kind of theatre. One moment you’re pulling the doona up tight against a brisker morning chill, the next you’re dodging magpies or standing in awe as streets burst into colour. It’s a season that doesn’t tiptoe in - it bursts, bold and unapologetic.

And what a season it is! It's celebration time! In these pages you'll find our quick-guide to the Carnival of Flowers in its refreshed format, and take a look back through the German history that shaped this region in Stein Country. We sit down with Toowoomba photographer Brontë McVeigh, step inside Tiffany Wicks' joyful, flower-filled garden, and discover the neighbourhood charm of Sage & Butler.

Spring also brings its own rituals: long breakfasts that spill into the afternoon, weekends spent wandering the markets, dogs tugging at their leads in newly green parks. It’s in these small, ordinary moments that spring feels most alive - and most like home.

And perhaps that’s why this season holds such a pull. Beyond the parades, blooms and big events, consider this your reminder: take it slow, enjoy what’s around you, and notice how the smallest things - a bud in the garden, a neighbour’s hello, a table shared outdoors - can transform the way a place feels.

This edition feels like a collective stretch back into the sunshine, a reminder that life here is brimming with creativity, flavour and community.

As always, we’re so thankful to you our readers, or the encouragement, the support, the hi-fives (literal and digital) - whose stories we get the joy of hearing and telling and who make this region the special place it is.

And of course, a HUGE Thank you to our advertisers – The Empire, Vikasati, Downlands Art Show, Toowoomba Grammar School, The Rock, Darling Downs Diagnostic Breast Clinic & Sold For What – who’s support has enabled us to pull together this jam-packed 32 pages of local journalism and photography.

We hope you love it, as much as we do.
