Let us introduce you to the brains behind some of your favourite local businesses. Emily Moon is a marketing consultant with a particular expertise in social media strategy. We won’t give away all the magic, but she is behind the Instagram accounts of some of your favourite bars, cafés and shops – and she is changing the way they do business.

ok, First things first: why toowoomba?

I actually grew up in St. George, a little town four hours south-west of Toowoomba where all of my family still reside. I went to boarding school in Toowoomba from Years 8-12. And although after graduation I had a short stint living in Brisbane, followed by a year living in Italy, Toowoomba just felt like home. I’ve been here solidly for five years now and I couldn’t imagine being anywhere else.

I feel as though Toowoomba has taken all the great parts of city life and mixed them with all the amazing parts of country life and it’s created a place that I am so proud to call home!

what does your business do – and what does it do differently?

My business is ELM Media & Marketing, a boutique marketing consultancy run by yours truly. I work primarily with small businesses to help them stand out from the crowd. I specialise in social media marketing and my passion is igniting business owners’ love for social media and empowering them to utilise these platforms to build brand awareness.

What I value most about ELM is our ability to become part of our client’s business. We celebrate the wins as if they were our own. We aren’t just a service provider that’s putting together and implementing marketing strategies in the background – we are part of their team. That’s something that I think is super special!

What have you learned about running a business in Toowoomba?

I think we have quite a unique business community in Toowoomba; although we live in a large region it’s still such a close-knit feel. I have made so many professional contacts locally that have grown into amazing friends and that makes running a business a whole lot easier – when you feel like you have others who are in the same boat, cheering you on.

I get so excited to see other local businesses succeeding and I think we’re in a really exciting growth period for our city.

What does an average day look like for you?

There isn’t really an average day at ELM, and that’s my favourite thing about what I do. Some days there’s content photoshoots and flitting between various coffee shops for meetings, and other days I’m in the office on lockdown planning social media content for clients, working with my in-house graphic designer on a suite of marketing materials, or just doing the ‘fun’ admin stuff that comes with running a business.

That being said, I do love starting the first hour of my morning in bed with a coffee listening to a podcast – learning something new before I even start the work day keeps me inspired.

What does your ideal weekend look like?

I usually start my Saturday with a reformer Pilates date with my girlfriends at the amazing Candy Browne Fitness Studio. Brunch and coffee with friends is another weekend  ritual – I love Milk & Honey Espresso Bar or Urban Grounds Café.

Now that the weather is warm, we have spent a few Sunday afternoons in the Botanic Gardens at the top of Queens Park. Think cheese platters, great friends and sunshine – seriously the BEST way to end a weekend!

Only a Toowoomba local would know…

That if you suffer from hay fever your cupboard needs to be stocked with Zyrtec pre-September!
