It’s the local charity that serves up free, hearty dinners seven days a week, 365 days to those in need, but it’s so much more than just a meal.

It’s no secret that there are some pretty awesome humans out there in our community, who dedicate their time week in and week out to those who need a helping hand. And with that, we’d like to introduce a new segment to The Field Guide’s Charity Spotlight, where we highlight some of the great work that’s happening in town. To kick off, we’re spreading the good word about Tony’s Community Kitchen.

The organisation, which was founded in 2020, is made up of more than 150 volunteers who donate their time to lovingly prepare, cook and serve nutritious meals seven nights a week, 365 days a year to those in need. This ensures those in our region who are homeless, experiencing economic stress, or alienated don’t go hungry and their basic needs are met, with the James Street base also offering shower and laundry facilities.

But it’s so much more than just a meal. Founder and Director Tony Hurle and his pack of volunteers take the time to have genuine conversations and build connections with those who visit, making them feel welcomed and visible without judgement. Tony’s also connects its visitors with other external services such as healthcare and accommodation aid, to try and better the quality of life for all they interact with.

With almost 30,000 meals provided to date, Tony’s isn’t looking to slow down anytime soon. With many in our community still struggling to find secure accommodation (made only more difficult during COVID-19), they’ll continue to put in the hard yards this year to ensure no one goes without.

If you’d like to get involved, you can apply to be a Tony’s volunteer here. Volunteering could look like cooking a hearty dinner in the kitchen, or simply taking the time to meet with those in need and listen to their story. You can also give a much-appreciated cash donation here.
