Toast - the humblest and yet the most exalted food item in any household.
(we Aussies really do seem to have a love-affair with it)
So why not elevate this household staple into art by inviting some of the most creative in our community to have some fun.
Artists consider this your callout!
We know the creative community in Toowoomba is next level and we want to celebrate your best creation rendered onto a piece of toast. To get your creative (and competitive) juices flowing there will be an art prize and an exhibition at The Write Gallery of the top 20 entries.
The Field Guide’s very own ode to Toast (2), a curated exhibition with a soft undercurrent of delicious playfulness.
Is it kitsch? Perhaps. Is it pop art? Possibly. Is it cool? Absolutely.
Originally inspired by a random TikTok (below), and then the works of Japanese artist Manami Sasaki, The Field Guide is once again leaning into the whimsy, and curating an exhibition of artworks on toast. A chance to let go of any creative inhibitions, lean into whimsy and throw caution to the wind.
Truth be told, ‘Toast 2’ was never on our radar.
But following the incredible success of Toast 2024 (nothing to do with us, all testament to the incredible artists that call this city and region home), and the near-constant emails, requests, messages and comments - well, we couldn’t exactly argue now could we!
“Toast” the 2024 version of our art prize and exhibition (our first ever); was without doubt a lot of fun!
A wacky idea, turned art-prize, followed by a week-long exhibition of edible artworks on toast by over 50 local artists, hundreds of visitors; and a gloriously eclectic curation of artworks made of hundreds-and-thousands; landscapes in squid ink; self-portraits in jam; and fondant masterpieces that were nothing short of a ode to the joy of creating - all in the name of raising funds for charity.
Toast 2 promises to be the same.
And with additional prizes, people’s choice categories, and some exciting ideas that
will be sure to have you smiling.

Entrant Application Due / Cut-off: 04th July (2025, yes 2025!)
Artwork Delivery: Between 11th - 13th July (Toowoomba Drop-off)
Exhibition: 26 July - 02 August
Entry: $15.00 per artwork submission (a limit of 2 artworks applies per artist).
Maybe it’s watercolours, maybe it’s oils, cake decorating, ganache, or impasto! Now we need you to think, “how can I do this with food?” . . .think Buttercream, Royal Icing, Ganache, Food colourings, Edible Pens, Acai Powder, Spirulina, Squid Ink (we tested this and it stinks, but go for it!) etc. using just about any tool you can use to bring your masterpiece to life. The only caveat is, it has to be edible (not tasty, just edible), and on a standard sized piece of toast.
