Mitch Richardson is a hot in-demand videographer with clients all over Australia. Recently the local filmmaker spoke at CreativeMornings about changing direction and finding new challenges. Now, with work spanning corporate and promotional films as well as weddings, Mitch is a member of the growing creative community basing themselves in Toowoomba and travelling wherever work takes them.

First things first: why Toowoomba?

I was born in Brisbane, living there for 22 years. I got married to my wife (Emily Richardson from Ruby Lane Flower Co) and we decided we needed a change. Toowoomba had kind of always been there as an option (Emily is from Toowoomba originally) and as we approached wanting to buy a first home, with Brisbane’s unaffordability for first home buyers, we decided Toowoomba could be a real option. We moved about six months later and have loved it ever since.

What is Castle & Crown?

Castle & Crown is a filmmaking business. We have been operating for more than five years and our product has come a long way in that time. I think what makes Castle & Crown different is our storytelling and colours. We pride ourselves on always delivering the highest quality films to our clients.

What have you learned about running a business in Toowoomba?

Toowoomba poses the unique opportunity and challenge of favouring small, local business. It means that Toowoomba will preference smaller businesses and there seems to be an earned loyalty of clients.

What does an average day look like for you?

I spend most days behind a computer. I have a little office in town sharing with Ben and Tyla from Social Palms. I ride my skateboard into work each day and what I’m working on can vary from weddings to corporate events to promotional films.

What does your ideal Toowoomba weekend look like?

I love getting around to the local cafes and we spend a lot of time walking our dog Scout through Queens Park.

Only a Toowoomba local would know…

There’s free tennis courts at Highfields and Groom Park. It’s been really great having these facilities especially coming from Brisbane and having to pay to use them.

FAVOURITE WEEKEND SPOT:

PERK UP: Sweet Talk Cafe! The best cafe in town.

RELAX: walking Scout through Queens Park and the Botanic Gardens.

INDULGE: we love movie dates at the Strand cinemas.

SHOP: honestly I just love visiting camera stores…

CATCH UP: Ground Up is a good spot for quick chats and catch ups I reckon.

BE INSPIRED: the amazing creative culture is inspiring enough, not to mention the incredibly talented people based here.
