ABOUT / We know that Kuro Beko is no surprise to our readers, everyone we talk to raves about their food. . . and with good reason. The chef and his team have found that elusive tension between the contemporary Australian dining scene and modern Japanese cuisine. Step inside and you'll be excused for thinking that you've stepped into any Izakaya in Osaka.

DESIGN / Tucked inside Duggan Laneway, upon entering you are cocooned in that familiar Japanese aesthetic that privileges soft lighting, clean lines and natural materials. Decorative elements are subtle and the layout has mastered the art of all-day dining. Those on the run can be seated in the central area and watch all the action in the open kitchen, whilst those looking for a quiet corner (did someone say date night?) can be privately tucked away.

FOOD / The menu is refined and pulls no punches. From sashimi to wagyu, delight in all the classic flavours of Japan - miso, sesame and yuzu. Each dish is a sculptural composition, yet there are no airs or graces here, their selection caters for all tastes, and promises diners will leave full and satisfied.

BONUS / Start off with a bowl of Edamame and the Spicy Corn, closely followed by the Karage and make sure you try the assorted Tempura. Take a food pause and sample one of their signature drinks (perhaps the Shochu Highball?!) or choose from the impressive selection of Japanese Gins and Whiskeys. And because we are here for the long game, settle in for the evening with the Saikyo Miso Cauliflower, Jikabi Yaki Lamb and Tonkatsu Pork. Oh, and do try the Black Sesame Crème Brûlée. Delicious!
